When are we?
About the year 67 AD. This is in the New Testament way after the prophet Daniel, and after Jesus' birth, death, resurrection and ascension. This is near the time when both the apostle Peter and the apostle Paul will be executed.
Where are we?
Peter probably dictated his second letter while he was in prison in Rome.
Why are we here now?
We're going to look at the end of the book of 2 Peter, and compare its commands to what happened at the end of Nebuchadnezzar's first dream in the book of Daniel.
By Way Of Background
King Nebuchadnezzar had several dreams in the book of Daniel. In the first one, he saw a rock cut out of a quarry that grew and destroyed a statue. Unfortunately for King Nebuchadnezzar, the statue looked a lot like himself. It disturbed him enough he woke up in the middle of the night and wanted to kill all his wise men if they couldn't tell him what was going on.
Daniel told him the rock represented the kingdom of God, which would grow and destroy the other kingdoms around it.
Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors. The wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them. The stone that struck the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
-- Daniel 2:35
Remember that in Jesus' time, Peter went by two names. The name "Peter" was given by Jesus to "Simon". "Peter" means "stone".
Peter is in prison and Peter's time is almost up. He's going to leave his body, which he called a "tent" or a "tabernacle" in 2 Peter chapter 1.
Scripture Passage
Listen for what Peter tells his readers to do in the last verse of 2 Peter 3. He uses the word "beware" and another instruction:
Verse 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
I think the last command in this letter is to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
In the Future
Believers will receive the new creation from Jesus, accept their new identities with Him, and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
