My Thoughts are not Your Thoughts

When are we?

I think about 711 BC. That's in the Old Testament after Noah, Moses, and David. Before the Babylonian captivity of Judah. About 700 years before Jesus was born.

Where are we?

Probably Jerusalem. Isaiah -- or maybe his followers -- are still writing the book of Isaiah.

Why are we here now?

Isaiah is writing that people can change their thoughts with help – mercy – from the Most High. The Most High commands to forsake fruitless thoughts in this chapter. Isaiah 55 has some good coaching on the subject of receiving new thoughts from the Most High.

Scripture Passage

IS 55:1-11

The first three verses are a kind of spiritual invitation:

Verse 1: “Ho! Everyone who thirsts,

Come to the waters;

And you who have no *money*,

Come, buy and eat.

Yes, come, buy wine and milk

Without money and without price.

NOTE: God is not worried about running out of this spiritual water!

Verse 2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread,

And your wages for what does not satisfy?

*Listen* carefully to Me, and *eat* what is good,

And let your soul delight itself in abundance.

NOTE: Depending on the sound, listening can be a form of spiritual eating.

Verse 3 Incline your ear, and come to Me.

Hear, and your soul shall live;

And I will make an everlasting covenant with you—

The sure mercies of David.

NOTE: A covenant with God is more than a promise people can trust.

This is real 'soul food'! It allows you to draw near to the Most High.

The next few verses are a short list of the sure mercies of David.

Verse 6 Seek the Lord while He may be found,

Call upon Him while He is near.

7 Let the wicked forsake his way,

And the unrighteous man his thoughts;

Let him return to the Lord,

And He will have mercy on him;

And to our God,

For He will abundantly pardon.

NOTE: You can SEEK THE LORD! That's good news! That's a sure mercy of David!

Letting the wicked forsake his way is a big mercy given to David. And the mercy is complete when he draws near to the Lord while He can be found.

For the next few verses we go into a kind of explanation about God's reasoning concerning His sure mercies.

Verse 8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,

Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.

9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

So are My ways higher than your ways,

And My thoughts than your thoughts.

NOTE: As the wicked forsakes His thoughts, He won't be alone. He can receive God's thoughts! That's what spiritual food from the Most High does!

Verse 10 “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven,

And do not return there,

But water the earth,

And make it bring forth and bud,

That it may give seed to the sower

And bread to the eater,

11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;

It shall not return to Me void,

But it shall accomplish what I please,

And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

NOTE: God is explaining a different view of what we call the evaporation cycle -- or maybe the "water cycle". We see things backwards from the way God sees them. He starts in heaven, where of course water should reside. Man starts on earth, where water runs out. When water disappears from the earth, man sees vanity. From heaven, the Most High sends water with a purpose -- to make thngs bud and fourish and continue the cycle of sowing and reaping.

That's also how the Most High speaks to the earth. That's why He invites people to draw near to Him.

That's the end of the passage.

In the Future

I think Jesus will later drink from this spiritual spring. Here's one clue: Jesus will say something near the end of His ministry: "Render to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." He will be talking about a transaction without money, like the drinks Isaiah talked about early in Isaiah 55.

Further in the Future

May many more receive Jesus' invitation to receive the Father's thoughts and nourish their souls. In Jesus' Name.
