Why Come Back?

When are we?

Around the year 30 AD. Near the end of Jesus' life and shortly before His resurrection from the dead.

WHERE ARE WE?

Jerusalem. Jesus said this is the place where prophets go to die. Jesus made himself no exception.

WHY ARE WE HERE NOW?

A friend of mine relayed a question to me. Jesus touches on the answer at His trial before being crucified.

I think the question my friend relayed was something like "Why does Jesus need to come back? He's done so much already."

BY WAY OF BACKGROUND

God keeps promises. Sometimes we forget to whom He has given the promises. For instance, we can look at the Garden of Eden for an example. God gave a promise that there would be two wounds. One on the "seed of the woman", and one on the "seed of the serpent". The Deliverer's heel would be wounded but also the serpent's head.

To whom was that promise given? Was it given to the woman? No. It was given to the serpent.

The point is God gives promises to His enemies that they aren’t happy about.

So now we'll fast forward through the Old Testament and the life of Jesus to His crucifixion in the New Testament.

SCRIPTURE

Mark 14:61-63

Verse 61: Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”

62 Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

63 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?”

And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.

That's the end of the passage.

NOTE: The promise Jesus gave just before His condemnation was not to His disciples -- most of them were gone. It was to His enemies in Jerusalem.

IN THE FUTURE

It sounds like the resurrection of Jesus' enemies won't be very pretty. Revelation 1:7 has more on the phrase "Coming with the clouds of heaven"

Revelation 1:7

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Jesus warned that His coming will be like a thief in the night and will catch people off guard. We can humble ourselves and recognize Jesus made a lot of uncomfortable promises to His enemies.
