When are we?
About 27 AD, near the start of Jesus' ministry. Before John the Baptist's death.
WHERE ARE WE?
The Sea of Galilee, also known as the Lake of Gennesaret. North of the Dead Sea and east of the modern-day port of Haifa. There can be good fishing on some nights.
WHY ARE WE HERE NOW?
I've used the term, "Three Men on a Hill" in previous episodes to describe different scenes in the Old Testament. They show similarity to the three men on a hill when Jesus will be crucified.
Jesus will take these three men with Him at different milestone moments in His ministry.
We're going to look at the first time these three are mentioned in the Gospel of Luke.
BY WAY OF BACKGROUND
Night fishing is usually more effective at this location than fishing during the day.
SCRIPTURE
Luke 5:1-10
Talking about Jesus in Verse 1:
Now while the multitude pressed on him and heard the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.
2 He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 Simon answered him, “Master, we worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the net.” 6 When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 They beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.
NOTE: This partnership is going to go through some rough times, like the nets that are breaking.
Verse 8 But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord.”
9 For he was amazed, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.
Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid. From now on you will be catching people alive.”
That's the end of the passage. (World English Bible)
That's the start of how Jesus started to change a business partnership.
IN THE FUTURE
Simon will hear from Jesus' Heavenly Father. Afterward, he will be called "Peter".
Jesus will choose Peter, James and John to accompany Him when He raises Jairus' daughter from the dead.
The three partners will ascend the Mount of transfiguration making the three normal-looking men on that mountain. The voice from heaven will tell the three, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”
The three will pray with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
After Peter will deny Jesus, Jesus will give Peter a new job: to be a shepherd for Jesus' sheep.
May we continue to agree with the Most High as he speaks to us and transforms our lives. In Jesus' Name. Ba Shem Yeshua.
