The Ancient of Days

Many of my episodes go forward in time. I start with background. I cite a Scripture. Then I talk about the future.

This episode is going to be different. I'm going to cross reference the New Testament and the Old Testament like shuffling cards. I'll try to make my line of reasoning and points clear.

I reach a conclusion that God -- Jesus' Father -- is the Ancient of Days mentioned in the Old Testament book of Daniel in Chapter 7. God the Father made an appearance in the Old Testament alongside Jesus.

Here's why I think that.

I believe the Father prepared Jesus to die, rise from the dead and reign in Heaven again.

He gave Himself a big task -- send His grown Son as a baby into the womb of a virigin and then coach that human by the Holy Spirit.

This means Jesus had to grow in wisdom and knowledge. Other people have to look for wisdom. So did Jesus.

Luke 2:52 says this as Jesus was growing up, he "increased in wisdom". Jesus didn't know "everything" to start with, or the Scripture that "Jesus increased in wisdom" would be meaningless.

My audience might ask, "How did Jesus grow in wisdom if He's the Son of God?"

Sometimes people put too much faith in "knowing" and not enough trust in God. Remembering that endless "How" questions can result in endless debates, I'm just telling you what I believe. I'm sharing some pieces of evidence to explain why.

Solomon wrote that the book of Proverbs was designed for people to understand the sayings and the riddles of the wise. (See Proverbs 1:6)

Let me emphasize a word here: "riddles".

ONE WAY GOD TAUGHT JESUS WISDOM WAS GOD LEFT JESUS RIDDLES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. He then coached His Son by the Holy Spirit to show Him the answers.

That's part of how the Father taught His Son wisdom on earth right in front of other people.

Who is the Ancient of Days? That's one of the riddles that faced Jesus.

In modern academia, there's a game everybody plays that the most credentialed people -- and the ones with the most money -- know what questions and riddles are important.

It's written about Jesus, however, that He impressed the credentialed teachers of the law in the temple not only with His answers, but with His questions as well. (See Luke 2:46)

Where did Jesus get good questions? I think it was by learning wisdom from His Heavenly Father.

Let's jump ahead to the ascension. Jesus has been crucified and raised from the dead. He then assembled his disciples in the book of Acts. Jesus expected to ascend into heaven. He was received in a cloud.

Acts 1:9

Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

I THINK THE CLOUD IS IMPORTANT. IT'S A CLUE. It's something that's hinted at in the Old Testament in a passage about the Ancient of Days.

The Ancient of Days is mentioned three times in the Book of Daniel. He opens court in heaven; He gives someone called the Son of Man authority. He makes other decisions in heavenly court and rules in favor of the saints.

Here's His second reference in the book. Keep an ear out for "cloud":

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE Daniel 7

This is Daniel talking about a dream:

Verse 13 “I was watching in the night visions,

And behold, One like the Son of Man,

Coming with the *clouds* of heaven!

He came to the Ancient of Days,

And they brought Him near before Him.

14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,

That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.

His dominion is an everlasting dominion,

Which shall not pass away,

And His kingdom the one

Which shall not be destroyed.

End of Scripture

Did you get the mention of "cloud"? I think it's related to the cloud that received Jesus at His ascension.

Let me continue to build the case that the Ancient of Days is Jesus' Heavenly Father.

We just referenced the Ancient of Days' second reference in the Old Testament. In the first reference, there are some clues that are also later repeated in the New Testament -- in the Book of Revelation.

Daniel 7

Verse 9 “I watched till thrones were put in place,

And the Ancient of Days was seated;

His garment was white as snow,

And the hair of His head was like pure wool.

His throne was a fiery flame,

Its wheels a burning fire;

10 A fiery stream issued

And came forth from before Him.

A thousand thousands ministered to Him;

Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.

The court was seated,

And the books were opened.

I think there are descriptions of the Ancient of Days that appear later in the New Testament book of Revelation the 5th chapter.

Note: the "ten thousand times ten thousand" and "hair like pure wool". But Revelation doesn't call the Father the "Ancient of Days". The reference is more like "He who sits on the throne".

Here's the New Testament Revelation chapter 5 describing thousands of thousands of worshippers.

Verse 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands,

That's a New Testament reference to the throne. It’s in line with Daniel 7's picture of 100 million worshippers.

Here's another fulfillment about the hair:

Revelation 1:14 says about the Son of Man: "His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow."

Remember: "like Father like Son"!

So, what's the point? Who's the hero here?

I think Jesus says His Father is the real hero in this story. He made the promises in Daniel's dream, raised Jesus from the dead and made good on His promise to make Jesus king forever.

Thank God the Father that He has raised up Jesus, and taught Him faith and wisdom so well. It's good to look back on the success of our family. In Jesus' Name.
