The Sermon on the Mount references this important rock.
I'm going to pray.
Father in Heaven, please grant us hearing and obeying Your voice in this life in Jesus' Name.
NOT THE FASTEST, BUT THE BEST.
In many 21st century projects, the following saying rings true: "TIME, QUALITY, PRICE. PICK TWO." When I worked IT projects, the saying helped overcome the fantasy that a project could cheaply and instantly be high quality. Sometimes with elegan design that was the case -- many times, No.
Jesus Himself knew there were tradeoffs in life, and He couldn't live a fantasy.
DISCLAIMER ABOUT THIS UPCOMING PASSAGE
In this passage Jesus talks about the choice between building on sand or building on rock.
I think Jesus was probably in an area where you had a clear choice of what to build a house on: either sand or rock. In other locations, He might have presented other options. For instance, a look at the 21st Century New York City skyline will show you where the firmest rock is in the city -- I’m told it's where the tallest towers are built.
SCRIPTURE PASSAGE
Jesus is finishing up the Sermon on the Mount. When He talks about these "sayings of His", I think He's talking about the preceding parts of the Sermon on the Mount.
MATT 7
Verse 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Note: What does Jesus call 'practicing lawlessness'? It looks like it's the same as not doing the will of Jesus' Father in Heaven. Was it easy for Jesus to always do the Father's will? I don't think so. Read on...
Verse 24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
NOTE: This house represents whoever has sober expectations. He knows it takes work to listen, hear, and do the Father's will. He knows there will be a test on the building. He knows there are high expectations on the quality of the work.
What is the rock? Something the builder of the house took the time to found his house on. Something stable and in this case not always convenient.
Verse 26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
NOTE: When so-called building codes allow shoddy workmanship, the result can be a nice-looking -- maybe even luxurious -- building that doesn't stand up to the weather. The building may go up a little faster and cost a little less, but doesn't fulfill the promise that it was supposed to fulfill. The testing of fantasy lives is the same.
WHATS THE POINT?
Jesus tells you how He lived in the Sermon on the Rock.
It's just like what He told us to do! Dig! Seek the Father's will. Obey when He calls.
What to do if someone else gets more popular, or more power, or richer? One option is to trust God like Jesus did -- and still does.
In a previous episode titled Building On Rock, I mentioned the similarity between the fall of the house not built on rock, and the statue in Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel -- it crashed, got ground to powder, and blew away.
IN THE FUTURE
People will continue to get rewards for taking the time to listen, hear and be called by Jesus' Heavenly Father. Other people will also get rewards for their impatience.
May the Most High continue to have mercy on us.
