There were two kinds of stones at the crossing of the Jordan: stones that started out wet, and stones that started out dry.

There were two kinds of people at JTBs baptism: people who humbled themselves and became wet, and those who didn't and stayed dry.  By the time Jesus came they had either been baptized by John or not.

When Joshua led Israel across the Jordan.,

there were two kinds of stones picked up and moved: some started in the water and were visible when the river stopped flowing. These were publicly pulled from the bottom of the river and built into a memorial on dry land.

It was inly the stones that came up from the river that went with Joshua's men.

Other stones started on the dry land and had been easily visible all the time.

But they were picked up by Joshua's men and put down at the bottom of the river before it started flowing again.

Places at the Jordan were swapped: 12 stones were elevated out of the river; 12 stones were demoted into the river.

………………………

There were two kinds of people at John's baptism.

Some went into the water, confessed their sins (in front of everybody) and publicly got baptized.

Others were on the bank. They were saying to themselves that they were glad they weren't like the other people in the water. These people said, "We have Abraham as our father."

They thought they were right, but they weren't. Back in Genesis, Abraham had not withheld his son Isaac from the Most High, and the Most High promised Abraham that the Son of God would not be withheld from Abraham's family. Abraham rejoiced at this news.

So among Abraham's descendants,  there were two kinds of people at the river Jordan during John the Baptist's ministry: those in the water, and those on the bank.

And someone else. Jesus.

The short version is Jesus didn't stay on the bank and say, "Well, I have the Most High as MY father, so I REALLY don't have any reason to go into that river at all."

He went into the river. He joined people that confessed the truth by their position. He joined people that humbled themselves enough to confess their sins.

Jesus was destined to cause the rising and falling of many in Israel.  Getting off the bank of the Jordan and humbling himself,  Jesus had some humble-minded people elevated and warned some high-minded people they would be put down.
