Command Me Out To You

I'm looking at a note that says, "How do you restore connection with the big rock?"

The question was implied by a conversation with a friend who was saying something to the effect of, I sometimes feel a connection with the Most High, who is a big rock. Sometimes the confidence isn't there.

Some people will like to pretend to counsel you by saying, "If you don't feel close to God, He didn't move. You did." While what they say is true, it's amazing how those words often don't help.

Let's talk about RESTORING TRUST in our walk with Jesus. And in the process, we'll be talking about the BIG ROCK of Mount Sinai, and the voice that gave commands on it.

When Jesus commanded Peter out on the sea He used "BIG ROCK" language.

When Jesus walked on the water, He first said something like, "Take courage. I AM." Jesus used the same words as the burning bush that was on top of the BIG ROCK Mount Sinai.

I don't think He gave Peter an invitation. I think it was a command.

In Matthew 14 when Peter was figuring out that it was Jesus on the waves saying "Take Courage. I AM.", Peter said something like, "If that's so, command me to come to you." So the same voice that had commanded Moses to bring people out of Egypt commanded Peter: "Come."

When Peter got distracted, he sank. You could say at that point that he was feeling like my friend -- far away from the Big Rock. Jesus immediately pulled Peter up.  My Bible quotes Jesus as saying, "You of little faith. why did you doubt?" Jesus was RESTORING PETER'S TRUST.

I feel like I understand Peter. He had a lot more experience negotiating with waves from inside a boat than outside. And the sea was not calm.

One of the ways we get tricked into losing confidence in the Most High is to take on responsibility that's not ours. I think responsibilities that aren't ours affect our trust. More on that later.

My friend went on to describe problems at work. Problems like what he called Big Rock projects that don't break down to smaller projects. I might sound pessimistic in the next part as I respond, but I promise I'll have some fun doing it.

By the way, people in work environments are probably paid to at least pretend that they can make every project into a smaller project. Some projects don't work like that.

For example, when we receive Jesus, the difference is spiritually like Day versus Night. The Night's gotta go. The light of the Day totally REPLACES it.

A sunrise is a big transformation that doesn't just affect a little part of the sky at a time. It affects the whole sky moment by moment.

Work environments might be different than spiritual ones.

Work might be less like Jesus meeting you and commanding you to come to Him, and more like your boss ordering you out of the boat while HR is watching to see how wet your feet get. Hence work is not always an environment where they care to RESTORE TRUST.

I actually had some fun slowly getting fired from a job in my day. I was being coached how to grow spiritually, get everything in writing, and send items into my personnel file. It was a tough but growing experience.

A Boss might need to pretend that he's like Jesus and that he has the power to command -- or coerce -- people to do miracles. Like walk on water or stop the wind. A boss might like you to think that HR is taking notes of your performance to your advantage. In situations like that I found taking good notes and specifically asking that my weekly updates be inserted into my personnel file lengthened my time at a job by months and years. Having clear boundaries at work brings a lot of peace in the long run.

I've talked about Jesus' environment and a work environment. I think I'll finish by talking about a personal environment.

I survived a divorce with some fairly nasty complications. In terms of my personal life, I've found that practicing humility pays off in the long run.

I know a church that prays what they call the knock down kick down prayer. The idea is to ask Jesus to make us into the kind of people that can get the greatest personal gain for the least amount of pain.

Part of the prayer goes like this:

Please come with power and authority and remove the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh

and pride of life from my entire being.

I like to add -- "Please grant me your humility, in Jesus' Name."

I'm leaving a link to their emergency prayer in the transcript.

Conclusion

My friend shared some healthy ideas. Get with brothers in Christ. Talk about what's happening. Let conversations meander around -- sometimes a good piece of advice will be shared.

May we go and do likewise. In Jesus' Name.
