BACKGROUND

I'm part of a gathering of men who meet about twice a month and read some Scripture.  As I started writing this episode, we were headed towards a passage that describes rocks, adultery and barrenness. It likens worship of idols to a kind of adultery. Properly directed honest worship is much preferred.

I’ll read some excerpts from Jeremiah’s book at the end of this episode – after I finish sharing some more thoughts.

THE VISUAL EFFECT

In the passage we're coming to, Jeremiah says Israel should look to the “barren hills”.  I think the visual effect Jeremiah complains about is a little like seeing a social media nuisance on a screen.  

The practice of clearing off tops of hills to advertise places of worship to other gods was like setting up billboards along a highway to turn off to the casino in 99 miles.  Or 84. Or 77. You get the idea.

THE PROBLEM Jeremiah addresses is this: either idolaters don’t return to the Most High, or they PRETEND to return to the Most High without changing their habits.

THE CURE that Jeremiah offers: we should learn how to blush again.  

Think about this: If we whine to God about having a barren wallet, how about changing the way we spend our time? Or what links we want to save on our cell phones for later?

Those are my thoughts about staying faithful to the Most High.

Following are excerpts from Jeremiah 3 starting with

Verse 2. Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see!

Where have you not been ravished?

By the waysides you have sat awaiting lovers

like an Arab in the wilderness.

You have polluted the land

with your vile whoredom.

3Therefore the showers have been withheld,

and the spring rain has not come;

yet you have the forehead of a whore;

you refuse to be ashamed.

4Have you not just now called to me,

‘My father, you are the friend of my youth—

5will he be angry forever,

will he be indignant to the end?’

Behold, you have spoken,

but you have done all the evil that you could.”

PART OF VERSE 8 Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the whore. 9 Because she took her whoredom lightly, she polluted the land, committing adultery with stone and tree. 

VERSE 13 Only acknowledge your guilt,

that you rebelled against the Lord your God

and scattered your favors among foreigners under every green tree,

and that you have not obeyed my voice,

declares the Lord.
